5. How did you hear about Naturally Colorado? What made you become a member? Has Naturally Colorado helped you in any way?

I first started volunteering with Naturally Colorado in the early stages of Naturally Boulder. I was attracted to a community that shared in the mission of a brighter, healthier and more sustainable future. Over the years, I have experienced the benefits of Naturally Colorado both personally and for SchroderHaus. Most recently, I’ve met fabulous new teammates for our kick-ass Haus crew. What I have enjoyed the most over the years is the safe and collaborative space to share, learn, grow, and cultivate the world we all want to live in. We’re here to lift one another up, to celebrate each other’s successes and ensure that we have a healthy planet for generations to come.

6. What size is your company?

9 employees; 7 contractors

7. What inspired you to start your company?

I was inspired to start SchroderHaus as I wanted to offer brands and organizations that shared my values and believed in a better future an agency that could flex to their strategic communications needs. What sets SchroderHaus apart today is that we truly are extensions of our clients’ teams. We build out customized teams and bespoke marketing communications programs that fit our clients growth stage and business goals. We’re not just a PR agency, we’re a team of kick-ass communicators who can help bring our clients stories to life via media engagement, thought leadership, organic and paid social, experiential marketing, influencer engagement, affiliate marketing and more!

8. Why did you choose to focus on the natural and organic industry?

There’s a few reasons why SchroderHaus focuses on the natural and organic industry. First, our team believes that if something is good for us, it’s likely better for the planet, too. We believe that if you put good in, you get good out, which is why we focus on serving better-for-you brands and organizations helping create a better, brighter future. Second, my own personal health journey keeps me focused on this space. I believe in a holistic approach to managing life-long wellness, and that includes prioritizing foods, beverages, personal care and more that helps me live my best life. Lastly, I have a young son and feel strongly about helping cultivate the brightest future possible for him and generations to come.

9. Can you describe the biggest challenge you faced during the early stages of your company, and how you overcame it?

I think the biggest challenge at the start has been learning to listen to my instincts when it comes to potential partnerships, tactical approaches for our clients and even my own personal capacity. Yes, it’s important for business decisions and even campaign approaches to be rooted in data, consumer insights and sound financial planning, but I also believe in listening to what the heart and gut are telling you to do, too. I’ve found when I do, our team and our clients win, and when I don’t, I am likely to come to regret it later.

10. What keeps you up at night regarding your business?

In the seat I sit in, I have the responsibility and privilege of both cultivating the growth of a team I care deeply about, and also inspiring our clients to do their best and stay true to their missions. What keeps me up at night is making sure my team has the opportunities to learn, grow and thrive. Additionally, because we’re so integrated into our clients’ team, I can also be up at night ruminating about the details of our client programming and making sure that we’re doing our absolute best to experience mutual success.

11. What strategies can you share that have been effective?
1. Keep your values at the forefront and utilize them to assess new teammates, new partnerships and how you’re telling your story to your various stakeholders and customers. 2. Don’t forget to take care of you. Being a founder can easily take over your whole life. Remember it’s a piece of the pie and that you’ll serve your business and team best if you also take care of you. 3. Lean into gratitude. I journal daily and part of that practice includes capturing the small to big things I’m grateful for, at times even gratitude for those things I’m hoping will come to fruition. This practice keeps me focused on the positive and the posibilities.
12. How important is networking, and what strategies do you use to build and maintain professional relationships?

Networking should result in win-win relationships. Rather than approaching networking with an attitude of, “what can I get from this conversation,” start with, “what can I give.” When you offer yourself and the special gifts you have to others and this community, undoubtedly opportunities will come back to you. Additionally, as a person who would much rather have deep conversations with others and learn what makes each person tick, I approach conversations with curiosity and an openness to listen. And, when I feel a true connection with someone, I actively cultivate it, planning our next time to chat and asking, how can I help?

13. What is one piece of advice or knowledge that has changed your life and why?

My step-mom has often said to me, “sometimes when you say no, you’re saying yes to yourself.” This is something I have to practice as an overachiever and a “helper” (anyone into the Enneagram?). While it can be tempting to say yes to every opportunity that comes your way, take that moment to assess if it’s really best for you, your team and your business. Is saying yes to that new distribution really going to serve you long term, or are you better served going deeper with existing retail partners? Is saying yes to that new client opportunity going to excite and help your team grow, or will it be a drag on the team’s time and energy? Pausing to ask yourself these types of questions, and then really be honest with yourself about the answers, will help you make sure you’re saying yes to the right things and leave you open to the opportunities you really want.
